Modern Introduction To Hemp, October 2026 edition, by Paul Benhaim

Modern Introduction To Hemp

From Food to Fibre: Past, Present and Future

I wrote the first version of this book in 2003, at a kitchen table, with a box of hemp snack bars beside me and a fair amount of frustration. Hemp seed was a legal food in Europe and North America. In Australia, where I was living, you couldn't legally eat it. The first page carried a warning in capital letters telling Australian readers to check the law before they tasted anything.

What's inside
  • What hemp is, how it differs from drug cannabis, and why the THC line matters
  • Ten thousand years of hemp history, with the myths taken out
  • The main producing countries in 2026 and the regulatory shifts in Australia, the US, Thailand, India and the EU
  • Where the US farm bill stands as of October 2026, and the latest USDA hemp figures
  • Hemp foods and nutrition, and what the evidence does and doesn't support about health
  • Fibre, paper, textiles, hempcrete, plastics, fuel and the 9 to 15 tonnes of CO2 per hectare question

For: Anyone new to hemp, and anyone who has to brief someone who is.

Growing Hemp for Profit, October 2026 edition, by Paul Benhaim

02 · First published 2010 · Updated for 2027

Growing Hemp for Profit

A Practical Field Guide from Seed to Sale

The first edition came out in 2010 as a downloadable ebook with two interviews, a cultivation overview and a lot of enthusiasm. Hemp food was still illegal in Australia. The United States had no legal hemp farming at all. Most of the contacts in that edition are long gone, and a few things we believed back then turned out to be wrong.

What's inside
  • Why the buyer comes before the seed, and how to build a farm around a real market
  • Fibre, grain, dual-purpose and floral genetics, with named public varieties
  • Day length and latitude, and why a good European variety can fail in Queensland
  • Soil, sowing rates, weeds, pests and harvest timing, with rates experienced Australian growers use
  • Decortication from large European lines to mobile units, and the processing-radius rule
  • Worked grain and fibre economics, honest break-even points, and licensing in Australia, the US, Canada, the EU and the UK

For: Farmers, landholders and investors thinking about a first hemp crop, and growers who want their second season to pay better than their first.

How to Build a Hemp House, October 2026 edition, by Paul Benhaim

How to Build a Hemp House

Hempcrete and Every Way to Build with It

The first edition came out around 2010, and it was really an interview. I sat down with Klara Marosszeky, one of the early starters in Australian hemp building, and asked her everything I could think of: how she mixed, how she tamped, what went wrong and what she would never do again. Her answers became the construction manual most people knew the book for.

What's inside
  • What hempcrete is (hurd, a lime-based binder and water) and why it behaves so differently from concrete
  • Every way to build: cast in place, sprayed, blocks, prefabricated panels, floors, roofs, plasters and 3D printing
  • How to judge hurd quality, and every main binder family and where each one fits
  • Thermal, acoustic, moisture and fire performance, with the sources behind the figures
  • Building codes country by country in 2026
  • A step-by-step build sequence for a timber-framed hempcrete house, indicative costs, and the mistakes that ruin hemp walls

For: Owner-builders, architects, builders and certifiers, and anyone who wants a healthier house and wants to get it right the first time.

The Hemp Plastics Industry, October 2026 edition, by Paul Benhaim

04 · First published 2010 · Updated for 2027

The Hemp Plastics Industry

Materials, Methods and the Business of Replacing Oil with a Plant

The first version came out around 2010. It was a short collection of photos, market reports from 2009 and a few pages of me being excited. Some of that excitement holds up. Most of the numbers don't, and there was even a shopping section at the back. All of that is gone.

What's inside
  • What hemp contributes to a plastic, and which parts of the stalk do the work
  • Bio-based, biodegradable and compostable, and why those labels get abused
  • Every technology path, from fibre-reinforced and hurd-filled compounds to cellulose acetate and PHA
  • How each route compares on cost with the fossil plastics it competes against
  • Compounding, injection moulding, extrusion, thermoforming and 3D printing filament in practical terms
  • The public story of The Hemp Plastic Company, including the hemp plastic chess set coming soon

For: Product designers, brand owners, plastics people curious about natural fibre, and founders who want to enter this industry without losing their shirt.

The Hemp Textile Industry, October 2026 edition, by Paul Benhaim

05 · First published 2011 · Updated for 2027

The Hemp Textile Industry

From Field to Fabric, Country by Country

The first version was a short ebook report I put out around 2011. It had an interview with Barbara Filippone, a piece on two new processing technologies that were going to change everything, and a lot of links. One of those technologies went into creditor protection a few years later. The other never arrived.

What's inside
  • How fibre crops are grown, and the four ways to ret hemp
  • Decortication, scutching and degumming, and the real difference between long-line and cottonised hemp
  • Spinning systems, yarn counts in plain language, blends, weaving and knitting
  • Dyeing, finishing, GOTS and OEKO-TEX, and the claims you can and can't make
  • The honest water and carbon numbers against cotton, and how to read a market report
  • Fifteen countries, from China and France to Nepal, Pakistan and Australia, and where the margin sits

For: Fashion and textile brands, mill owners, investors and governments looking at a hemp fibre industry.

The Hemp Bodycare Business, October 2026 edition, by Paul Benhaim

The Hemp Bodycare Business

Starting and Growing a Hemp Skin Care Brand in 2026

The first edition was a thin thing. It came out around 2010, pointed you at a handful of soap-making websites that have since disappeared, and the best part of it was an interview with David Bronner about how Dr Bronner's started putting hemp oil in their soap.

What's inside
  • What's in hemp seed oil, what the evidence says, and the comedogenic question
  • Seed oil, CBD isolate, broad spectrum and full spectrum, and why the difference matters
  • What's legal in Australia, the US, the EU, the UK, Canada and Japan in 2026
  • Product categories, indicative margins, and how to work with a contract manufacturer
  • Stability and shelf life, labels and claims, and the branding mistakes I've watched good companies make
  • A worked start-up budget, real brand case studies, and four recipes to make at home

For: Anyone thinking about a skin care brand, and small makers ready to go from the kitchen to the shelf.

How to Make Hemp Paper, October 2026 edition, by Paul Benhaim

07 · First published 2010 · Updated for 2027

How to Make Hemp Paper

From Handmade Sheets to the Modern Pulp Mill

I wrote the first version in 2010. It was short, it was enthusiastic, and like a lot of hemp writing from that time it repeated a few stories I wouldn't repeat today. The old text is gone. This edition is a complete rewrite.

What's inside
  • Where paper came from, and why the earliest Chinese paper was made of hemp
  • Which hemp paper stories are true and which aren't, including the Declaration of Independence
  • A step-by-step guide to making hemp paper at home or in a small workshop
  • How industrial mills pulp and bleach hemp, and why it ends up in cigarette papers, Bible paper and security papers
  • Indicative pulp costs against wood, and what that gap means for your plans
  • Hurd in packaging and moulded fibre, and how to start without building a mill first

For: Makers, teachers, packaging companies and anyone who has ever been told the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp.

Hemp as a Fuel, October 2026 edition, by Paul Benhaim

08 · First published 2010 · Updated for 2027

Hemp as a Fuel

Biomass, Biofuels and Energy from the Whole Plant

I wrote the first version around 2010. It was short and it was hopeful. A lot of us in hemp, me included, talked about hemp fuel as if it was only a matter of time and politics before tractors and trucks ran on it. It was a great story to tell at a festival.

What's inside
  • What Henry Ford and Rudolf Diesel actually said and did about plant fuels
  • Burning hemp as bales, briquettes and pellets, and running hemp seed oil in a diesel engine
  • Cellulosic ethanol, biogas, pyrolysis, biochar and gasification in plain words
  • The 2013 hemp supercapacitor research, hydrogen, and sustainable aviation fuel
  • Energy yields per hectare against corn, sugarcane, miscanthus and canola
  • Carbon accounting with honest ranges, and policy in Europe, the US and Australia

For: Energy and agriculture people, students, and anyone who has heard the hemp fuel story and wants the real numbers.

09 · First published 2000 · Updated for 2027

H.E.M.P. Healthy Eating Made Possible

A Holistic Cookbook and Nutritional Reference Guide

This was my first book. It came out in 2000, was reprinted in 2001 and 2010, and became an ebook in 2024. I wrote most of it on the road, travelling through time zones and kitchens, learning from teachers who showed me how food shapes the way we live.

What's inside
  • Hemp past, present and future, from farming and seed varieties to the plant's many uses
  • Why hemp seed is such a complete food, how much to eat and how to store it
  • Vitamins and minerals, food combining, cravings and the acid-alkaline balance
  • Naturecure: water, breath, sleep, fasting and juicing
  • Permaculture, the kitchen garden, yoga and simple daily meditations
  • Around 200 hemp recipes: milks, butters, breads, soups, mains and desserts

For: Home cooks, plant-based eaters, and anyone who has bought a bag of hemp seeds and wondered what to do with it.

Living Food Recipes, October 2026 edition, by Paul Benhaim

Living Food Recipes

For Energy, Beauty and Longevity

I put this little book together in 2003, when I was running living food retreats in the Byron Bay hinterland and teaching people raw food one kitchen at a time. Most of what I know about eating well I learnt in those years, usually by getting it wrong first.

What's inside
  • How to break your fast gently, starting with lemon water and a liver cleanse
  • Nut milk, the super energy juice, and live bread made from juice pulp
  • Raw dips, crèmes, chutneys, sauerkraut, pickles and rejuvelac
  • Live soups warmed in a blender, plus living nut loaf, curry, spaghetti and lasagne
  • Raw sweet things: halva, fruit balls, ice-cream, chocolate and a celebration cake
  • Where hemp seed and hemp oil fit into everyday living food, and the kitchen tools that make it easy

For: Raw and plant-based cooks, and anyone who wants more energy from what's on their plate.
