The Water Math That Should Worry Every Fashion Brand

Textile executives rarely lose sleep over fibre botany. They are starting to lose sleep over water — and water is where hemp's case becomes arithmetic rather than advocacy.

Cotton requires on the order of 10,000 litres of water per kilogram of fibre. Hemp requires around 2,000, and in many growing regions rainfall alone covers it.[1] Comparative water-footprint studies put hemp's overall water footprint roughly 60% below cotton's, with its irrigated water requirement lower by more than 90%.[2] As water security moves from CSR reports to boardroom risk registers, those numbers stop being a sustainability talking point and start being a sourcing strategy.

The chemical side of the ledger

Water is only half the comparison. Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in agriculture, accounting for a disproportionate share of global pesticide sales relative to the land it occupies.[3] Hemp's dense canopy closes within weeks and shades out weeds, and the plant is naturally pest-resistant — which is why it is routinely grown with little or no pesticide or herbicide input.[3]

For brands answering to the EU's tightening textile regulations — from the sustainable textiles strategy to extended producer responsibility — the input profile of a fibre is becoming a compliance matter, not a preference.[3]

A heritage fibre with modern credentials

Hemp is not a speculative textile. It rigged sails and held ships together for centuries precisely because of its tensile strength; it remains among the strongest natural fibres, more durable than cotton, naturally resistant to UV and mould, and it softens with use rather than wearing out.

What changed recently is supply-side credibility. Europe's hemp cultivation grew 60% between 2015 and 2022, with production up 84% over the same period,[4] and modern processing — degumming, cottonisation, blending — now produces hemp yarns that run on conventional spinning equipment. China still dominates hemp textile processing, which is itself a strategic argument for Western and South Asian investment in fibre infrastructure.

Why hemp won't "replace" cotton — and doesn't need to

I've been in this industry thirty years and I don't make replacement claims. Cotton is a vast, entrenched, efficient global system. But at textile-industry scale, substitution at the margin is enormous: every percentage point of global fibre demand that shifts to hemp represents tens of thousands of tonnes of fibre and meaningful water and chemical savings. Blends are the realistic path — hemp-cotton, hemp-organic-cotton, hemp-lyocell — delivering measurable footprint reductions inside existing product architectures.

The brands moving first aren't doing it for the hangtag. They're doing it because their own climate and water disclosures are forcing fibre-level honesty, and hemp is one of the few natural fibres whose numbers improve the report.

What I tell apparel companies

Audit your fibre exposure to water risk first — the case for hemp will write itself out of your own data. Start with blends in durable categories (denim, workwear, canvas) where hemp's hand-feel and strength are assets. And go upstream early: fibre-grade hemp supply is still thin, and the brands that contract acreage and processing capacity now will set the terms later.

Fashion has spent a decade talking about sustainable materials. The water math says it's time to grow some.
